What are the rights of a divorced Muslim woman in Islam?

A divorced Muslim woman has clearly defined rights in Islam; she is never left without protection or provision after marriage ends. She retains her full mahr if it was not yet paid; divorce does not cancel this right under any circumstances. During iddah, her former husband is obligated to provide her with housing and full financial maintenance. She cannot be removed from the marital home during this period. If she has young children, she holds the primary right of custody, typically until boys reach seven and girls reach nine, though scholars differ a bit on exact ages. After iddah ends, she has complete freedom to remarry without any interference from her former husband. She also retains all her personal wealth, jewelry, and assets. A husband has no claim over anything she owned before or during marriage.
