Is it obligatory for a husband to financially support his wife in Islam?

Financial support, called nafaqah, is an obligatory duty on every husband the moment nikah is concluded, covering his wife's food, clothing, housing, and basic medical needs without any condition attached. This obligation stands completely regardless of whether the wife is wealthy, employed, or owns property herself, because Islam never ties her right to maintenance with her personal income. A husband who fails to provide this support without valid reason is considered sinful, and scholars agree a wife can even approach Islamic authorities to enforce this right if he neglects it deliberately. Her wealth and earnings remain entirely her own to spend, save, or invest as she chooses, with zero obligation to contribute to household expenses unless she willingly offers to.
