(asked from Bradford, UK) What does Islam actually say about having children within marriage? Is it obligatory or a personal choice?
Answered by
Imam Al-Nawawi, Dr. Yusuf Al-Qaradawi, Shaykh Ibn Uthaymin
Islam views having children within marriage as one of the most encouraged and celebrated aspects of married life, with the Prophet ﷺ specifically directing Muslims toward marrying someone loving and fertile, showing how central the continuation of a righteous Muslim generation was to his vision of marriage. Scholars agree that having children is a strong sunnah and deeply encouraged but not strictly obligatory in the sense that a couple who remains childless through no choice of their own carries no sin, since Allah alone controls the gift of children regardless of human intention or effort. However, deliberately avoiding children permanently without any valid reason is something scholars consider disliked and contrary to the spirit of Islamic marriage, since one of the recognized purposes of nikah in Islamic jurisprudence is the continuation of a righteous Muslim family. Temporarily delaying children through permissible means for genuine reasons such as health, financial stability, or completing education is considered acceptable by the majority of contemporary scholars as long as the intention to eventually have children remains sincere. A home filled with children raised upon Islam was something the Prophet ﷺ described with genuine pride and joy, making this one of the most beautifully encouraged aspects of Muslim family life. Allah knows best.
