What is the minimum mahr amount in Islam?
Answered by
Hanafi Fiqh, Ibn Abidin Radd al-Muhtar. Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim
Islam sets no fixed minimum mahr amount. No specific number is mentioned in the Quran or any authentic hadith. Mahr must be real, halal, and of genuine value. Even an iron ring or teaching someone the Quran has been accepted by the Prophet ﷺ as a valid Mahr. Hanafi scholars suggest ten dirhams as a minimum guideline; this is a scholarly opinion, not a divine ruling. Mahr is her right alone. It cannot be delayed, denied, or handed to her family without her permission.
