Is it permissible to do istikhara before choosing a spouse?

Yes, not only is it permissible, it is highly recommended. Istikhara before choosing a spouse is one of the wisest things a Muslim can do. Istikhara means asking Allah to guide you toward what is genuinely good for you and away from what is harmful, even if your heart is already leaning toward someone. The Prophet ﷺ taught istikhara for every significant matter in life. Choosing a spouse is one of the most significant decisions a person makes, so Istikhara here is especially appropriate. A common misconception is that istikhara must produce a dream or a feeling. This is not correct. After istikhara, you proceed with your decision and trust that Allah will open or close doors accordingly. Istikhara is not a replacement for practical research; meeting the family, assessing character, and taking advice still matter alongside it.
